Geographical position end transportation infrastructure of Perm

Perm city is the biggest city of Western Ural with population of over 1 million people.  The city is located within 1100 kilometers to the east from Moscow in the eastern outskirts of Russian Plain and western slope of Ural Mountains at the junction of two parts of the world - Europe and Asia. The area of the city is 800 square km.

Relief of the terrain within the city limits is the hilly steppe plain in the valley of the river Kama. The city is located along the river Kama, being on both banks of the river. At that the left bank of the river Kama is located higher than the right one and it is essentially dissected with ravines and gullies. 

At the present time Perm city is a big administrative, industrial, scientific and cultural centre of Volga Federal district and of Perm kray with rather diversified economy. There are key elements of transportation infrastructure in the city, necessary for its balanced development.  

Perm city is one of the biggest transportation hubs of Russia. The city occupies favourable geographical position, being at the junction of the railway from Europe to Asia and having access to the waterway in the direction of five seas.

Railway communication

Perm city is located in the northern and new direction of Trans-Siberian Railway that is undisputed competitive advantage of the city as a possible logistics centre of any level.  

Many passenger trains, connecting Central, North-West, Volga Federal districts of the country with Ural, Siberia and Far East go through Perm city. The capital of Russia - Moscow is connected with capitals of China and Mongolia as well as the second largest city of the Russian Federation with the capital of Kazakhstan by means of railway, assuming that rail transport goes through Perm city.

Railway station “Perm-II” is one of the main transportation hubs of Perm kray and the station “Perm-Sortirovochnaya” is one of the biggest ones in Russia.

Air transport

Perm city is serviced by the international airport “Perm”. The airport is able to take all the types of modern aircrafts.

The majority of regular passenger transportations are carried out en route “Perm - Moscow”.  There are also regular year-round flights to Saint-Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Kazan, Kirov, Samara and other cities, seasonal ones - to Sochi, Krasnodar and Anapa. Charter flights connect Perm with the cities of Thailand, India, Spain, Greece and other countries.

Water transport

The river Kama, flowing in the territory of the kray and the city is the important part of the single deep-water system of the European part of Russia, connected with waterways of European countries in its turn.   It is possible to transport cargoes to the ports of Baltic, White, Black, Azov and Caspian Seas, river ports of Big European ring from Perm city.  

Auto-roads

The total area of the roadway of automobile roads in the territory of Perm city is more than 19 635 ths. square meters.

Perm city is located on the European automobile route Е22 from the British Holyhead to Ishim, being directly on the automobile road of general use of Federal importance Р-242 Perm-Ekaterinburg.    It is possible to get from Moscow, Kazan, Ekaterinburg and other eastern regions of Russia to Perm city by auto-roads.
